How to Get Noticed by AI Screening Tools

AI screening tools are now a standard part of the recruitment process. Many employers use them to filter large volumes of applications before a human recruiter ever sees a CV. The good news? Candidates can significantly improve their chances of making it through that first digital gate with a few simple adjustments.

Here are the most effective steps to stand out when AI is part of the hiring process:

1. Mirror the Language in the Job Ad

AI tools scan for keyword alignment. If the job ad mentions specific skills, tools, or certifications, make sure those exact terms appear in your CV — but only if they actually apply.
Examples include:

  • Programming languages
  • Cloud platforms
  • Methodologies
  • Soft skills
  • Certifications

Small changes can dramatically improve matching scores.

2. Keep Formatting Simple and ATS-Friendly

Most AI tools struggle with overly designed CVs.
Avoid:

  • Text boxes
  • Icons
  • Multiple columns
  • Heavy graphics or images

A clean single-column layout with clear headings converts best.

3. Use Clear, Recognisable Job Titles

If your official job title is unconventional, for example “Tech Wizard” or “Customer Champion”, AI may fail to map it to a standard role.
Add a more recognisable title next to it, for example:
Tech Wizard (IT Support Analyst)
This helps AI and it helps the human who sees it next.

4. Front-Load Critical Information

AI reads top to bottom, prioritising the first half of your CV.
Make sure these appear early:

  • Professional summary
  • Technical skills
  • Recent experience
  • Certifications

Don’t bury the good stuff.

5. Add Measurable Achievements

AI engines look for impact. Numbers make your CV more credible and more searchable.
For example:

  • “Reduced incidents by 28% through improved monitoring”
  • “Delivered 12 major releases in a year”
  • “Managed 200+ internal users”

6. Tailor Your CV for Each Application

AI tools are designed to penalise generic applications.
A few minutes of focused tailoring, updating keywords, aligning responsibilities, and adjusting achievements will significantly improve your match score.

7. Keep Your Writing Clear and Direct

AI algorithms favour concise, plain language.
Avoid jargon that doesn’t appear in the job ad, overly complex descriptions, or clever phrasing.
Clarity beats creativity.

8. Use a Standard PDF (Unless Told Otherwise)

Most ATS and AI systems parse PDF files accurately.
Avoid scanned documents, image-only PDFs, or formats exported from design tools.

9. Include Skills Sections for Both Technical and Soft Skills

AI parsing systems separate skills into categories.
Create two clear lists:

  • Technical Skills (languages, tools, platforms)
  • Professional Skills (leadership, stakeholder management, communication)

This boosts your matching coverage.

10. Submit a Brief but Targeted Cover Letter

Many AI tools analyse cover letters as part of the scoring process.
In 2–3 short paragraphs, address:

  • Why the role interests you
  • How your experience aligns
  • A specific achievement relevant to the position

This can nudge you into the “human review” bucket.

Final Word

Getting past AI screening isn’t about gaming the system, it’s about making your experience easier to understand for both technology and people. With a few simple adjustments, candidates dramatically increase their chances of reaching the stage that truly matters: a conversation with a real recruiter or hiring manager.
