Our very own Julian Greaves, Director of Wellington Corporate, has delved into the what's driving people towards new opportunities, we’ve condensed his wisdom into a comprehensive list. So, whether you're yearning for a Monday that inspires, or aiming for a role that recognises your hard work, or simply seeking a team that feels like family, this is your guide to navigating the world of career changes in the current job market. Let’s discuss the keys to a ensuring your heading towards a fulfilling and prosperous career in the years to come.

Do you find yourself crawling out of bed like some monster from the deep every Monday morning? Or perhaps you spend time outside your office each morning, breathing, preparing for the day ahead. If any of these sound familiar, then it’s likely time for you to search for a new job! Our own Julian Greaves, Director of Wellington Corporate, put his thinking cap on and compiled the top ten reasons we so frequently hear for why people are considering a move to greener pastures! Check them out below.

  1. Your weekends are amazing! However, your Monday morning isn’t so good. Should you really bounce into work on a Monday? Yes, you should! – It’s true not many people do, but that job that lights up your Monday morning is out there. You should look for it.
  2. You worked hard to obtain your degree; you’ve worked hard to learn your profession. You should be rewarded for that hard work. Don’t settle for less than the job you’ve been working towards, sometimes the best career growth comes with a new role that challenges you.
  3. You #loveyourjob, but the team you’re working in don’t all feel the same way. Are these your kind of people? – if not you need to find a likeminded group of people. It will make all the difference.
  4. You’ve been in your role for a while, it’s becoming routine, your learning curve has slowed, something needs to change to get back on your growth path. Seek out that role with an employer offering structured professional development – there are some amazing learning and development opportunities in the market right now.
  5. This is possibly the best time to find a new role with unemployment being the lowest it has been for over ten years, below 5% unemployment means huge demand for skilled workers. Now is the time to move jobs, it may be a different story in 18 months.
  6. Almost everything about your job and your team is perfect. But you are leader-less, or even worse you have a leader who sucks the life out of you! – A common issue, move on, there are some incredible mentors out there. You should align yourself with one.
  7. You feel like everyone out there has flexible working offered to them, except you… Correct! Since March 2020 the whole corporate world has moved to more flexible working, this includes work from home, work from anywhere, flexible start and finish, and the option of part-time hours such as the 9 day week. If you aren’t getting offered these things and you want them, it’s time to align yourself with a new employer.
  8. Existing employers tend to lag the market for pay equity, this is especially the case with females. Pay equity is well documented, but regardless of your gender it is common to receive pay increases that equal double or triple inflation simply by moving sideways in your career. Yes, some employers will offer you a big pay rise once you resign, but why should they benefit when someone else has spotted your talent and potential? Don’t fall for the counter, move on. It’s not just about the money.
  9. You’ve had an amazing run! You’ve reported to an inspiring mentor who has taught you some amazing things. You’ve had a close-knit team of colleagues. Everything is perfect. Except your manager resigns, the new person is not your kind of person. The team starts to disband. This happens all the time. You know what excellent looks like. Move jobs to find it again. It’s still out there.
  10. Benefits! They have been slow to come in New Zealand largely because of fringe benefit tax, but more and more employers are including fringe benefits and they can make a huge difference. Free Private Healthcare, Gym/Wellness payments, Kiwisaver, extra leave, paid learning and development, are all becoming more common.
