Our people are our lifeblood here at Find, and we take great care to provide an environment that is enjoyable for all, and where culture-fit is paramount. Today we’re chatting to one of our amazing Auckland IT team members who has recently been promoted to Recruitment Consultant – Susanna Dyson! Check out our spotlight of her beneath and get in contact with her if you’d like to experience the difference she makes!

What’s your name, how long have you been in recruitment, and how did you get into it?

Susanna Dyson, and I started working in Recruitment in 2012. Like most people, I fell into recruitment! I had recently finished my Bachelor of Business degree and started an internship in an advertising agency when a family friend called asking if I wanted to try Recruitment as they had an opening. I decided to give it a go, joined the recruitment agency as a Recruitment Coordinator and now, several years later, I’m working as a Recruitment Consultant at Find.

What’s your favourite part about recruiting in the Auckland market?

I love how diverse Auckland is, especially within the technology space. Auckland is a hub of people, and with borders starting to reopen, I’m excited to see what sort of amazing people begin to arrive once again. It truly means that we’re interacting with different people every single day!

What’s your favourite part about recruiting, in general?

I am a big fan of bringing people together and it’s incredibly satisfying working with a candidate and matching them to one of our awesome clients. It’s so rewarding to be on the journey with them, and to experience the highs and lows associated with the job hiring process.

What’s your NUMBER ONE tip for anyone who is job hunting in this market?

It is a great time to be a candidate as there are plenty of opportunities, especially in the Technology space. My number one tip would be to reach out to your network whether it be a friend, ex colleague or recruiter as some of the best roles aren’t advertised and are filled by word of mouth.

What sort of roles do you specialise in taking care of? Is it easy for people to retrain, or recertify to get roles in that industry?

The technology space is my area of specialty and I recruit a range of IT roles within that space from Software Engineers right through to Project Managers and Business Analysts. With more and more online courses becoming available it is a lot easier to retrain or recertify but generally our clients like to see commercial experience to support certifications.

What are some of the ways you can support someone who is searching for work?

If you’re looking for a new role, I am always happy to reach out to my network or check in with our clients to see if they have something suitable within their teams. I am passionate about assisting candidates and connecting them to their ideal role so I am always available for a chat to understand what motivates you and offer guidance where I can.

Do you have any predictions for the recruitment market for the next 6-12 months?

It’s exciting that the borders have reopened, and we are speaking to returning New Zealanders as well as international candidates looking to relocate to New Zealand. However, we are also losing a large number of talented individuals to overseas employers. Because of this, I believe the talent shortage will continue for at least another year. Therefore, every organisation needs to be more creative and proactive with their recruitment practices if they wish to find the best people for their roles. Virtual and condensed interview processes, benefits packages and flexible working environments are ways to improve recruitment for both clients and candidates.

Scenario: I’ve applied for a lot of roles but I feel like I’m not getting any responses/interviews. What advice would you have for me around my CV/Cover Letter to get more interest?

With a cover letter, tailor it to the specific role that you are applying for and include why the role stood out to you and the value you would add. It needs to be engaging as you want to grab the interest of the reader so that they turn to your CV to find out more.

With a CV, unless you are applying for a Senior or highly technical role, keep your CV less than 3 pages and include keywords from the job description as a lot of employers and recruiters use filtering software that scans for keywords and evaluates how closely they match the available role.
